The Talisman Medallion
Woven in the Caucasus region during the late 19th century, this antique Shirvan rug is a distinguished by its tribal geometry and color work. The composition is anchored by its commanding, stepped central medallion, set against a deeply saturated indigo field that highlights the precise, symmetrical motifs within.
Close examination reveals a deliberate symbolic vocabulary. Eight-pointed stars —ancient emblems of cosmic order—are arranged alongside stylized bird and gazelle motifs, capturing the vitality of the natural world. The main borders tightly frame the piece with repeating diamond geometries, while the delicate outer guards feature an undulating "S" motif, a traditional homage to running water.
The palette is grounded, balancing the depths of midnight blue and warm madder red with ivory and accents of moody verdigris. We were drawn to its highly structural, architectural character, rich history, and a sense of quiet wonder it imparts to a curated space.
